Origin of Ametsuchi

In Japan, beauty is more than routine.
It is a ritual.
A quiet reset. A return to nature.
A pause between heaven and earth:
天地 (Ametsuchi).

At Ametsuchi, we began with a simple idea: beauty rituals should feel restorative, not rushed. In a world that moves quickly, we were longing for something slower, more intentional. A way to reconnect with yourself through thoughtful, sensory care. A quiet return to balance.

Rooted in Japanese tradition and guided by nature’s quiet wisdom, Ametsuchi offers gentle, purposeful products designed to nourish not only the skin and hair but also the spirit. Each formula blends time honored botanicals with modern hair science to deliver both visible results and a sense of calm.

Inspired by the serenity of traditional ofuro baths and forest sanctuaries, our products bring the essence of a Japanese spa into your everyday routine.

Made in Japan Quality

Crafted entirely in Japan, each Ametsuchi formula is developed in small batches with care. Our products are made in collaboration with trusted Japanese laboratories that uphold the highest standards of quality, safety, and purity. We source our botanical ingredients from a dedicated artisan who hand-forages and distills it in the mountain forests of Japan. This slow, seasonal process preserves the essence and integrity of the oil, honoring nature’s rhythm and tradition. The result is a sensory experience that feels sacred, grounded, and deeply restorative.

Why Hinoki

At Ametsuchi, Hinoki is more than an ingredient. It’s our signature scent, our anchor, our quiet mascot. Hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa), or Japanese cypress, has long been treasured in Japan, used to build temples, forest paths, and traditional ofuro baths. But its beauty is more than cultural: it’s botanical, and backed by science.
Hinoki oil contains active compounds like alpha-pinene, beta-pinene, and hinokitiol, ingredients shown to offer antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and mood-calming effects. Unlike harsher ingredients often used in scalp care (such as synthetic fragrance or aggressive clarifiers like tea tree), Hinoki purifies without stripping, soothes irritation, and supports a naturally balanced scalp environment.

They tell us.
'The moment you experience it, you will know.'

Yumi Founder

In 2010, after moving from Japan, I opened a small hair salon in San Francisco and watched many clients sit in my chair with dry, damaged hair and irritated scalps. I felt frustrated that I could not fully relieve their discomfort, especially because I was struggling with the same problems myself and the local water, climate, and products were not helping. On a visit back to Japan, the quiet scent of hinoki and the slow rhythm of bathing rituals reminded me how gentle care can make the body and mind feel safe again. I came home wanting to give that same feeling to my clients, and began creating products in Japan that put the scalp first, using carefully chosen ingredients and modern formulation. That wish became Ametsuchi, daily care that helps restore the scalp, support healthier hair, and offer a small moment of comfort in everyday life.

Matsumoto Kazuya Creative Director

In Japan, there is an ancient form of the Japanese language known as Yamato Kotoba, characterized by words that evoke the five senses. The Yamato Kotoba term Ametsuchi (天地) signifies 'all things that grow on Earth.'" The design concept of Ametsuchi, crafted with natural materials, centers on "light." This light, illuminating all that grows on this Earth, symbolizes abundance. Ametsuchi was created with the hope that everyone touched by its light will feel enriched.

I was deeply inspired by the founder's words, who brings a unique Japanese sense of care, beauty, and unparalleled moments to life. Her vision led me to reconsider how to reinterpret the essence of Japan for the future, particularly through fragrance. Ametsuchi’s signature scent, hinoki, was created to express the tranquility and light found in nature. It was important for me to craft a fragrance that speaks to the “Zen” mindset, where the subtle yet profound aroma of hinoki leaves a lasting impression, embodying the peaceful spirit and depth I wanted to convey.
