In 2010, after moving from Japan, I opened a small hair salon in San Francisco and watched many clients sit in my chair with dry, damaged hair and irritated scalps. I felt frustrated that I could not fully relieve their discomfort, especially because I was struggling with the same problems myself and the local water, climate, and products were not helping. On a visit back to Japan, the quiet scent of hinoki and the slow rhythm of bathing rituals reminded me how gentle care can make the body and mind feel safe again. I came home wanting to give that same feeling to my clients, and began creating products in Japan that put the scalp first, using carefully chosen ingredients and modern formulation. That wish became Ametsuchi, daily care that helps restore the scalp, support healthier hair, and offer a small moment of comfort in everyday life.

Her vision led me to reconsider how to reinterpret the essence of Japan for the future, particularly through fragrance. Ametsuchi’s signature scent, hinoki, was created to express the tranquility and light found in nature. It was important for me to craft a fragrance that speaks to the “Zen” mindset, where the subtle yet profound aroma of hinoki leaves a lasting impression, embodying the peaceful spirit and depth I wanted to convey.
